Top Tips
Here are some of PainSupport's Top Tips for pain relief. Pick out one or two
to use now and add more as you need them.
- Focus on all that you are and all that you can do, not on what you are not and cannot do.
- Take 'Breathing Breaks' often throughout the day (see the page on Breathing for this technique).
- Ask yourself what you are going to do to-day that is special for you, and make sure you do it! Do this every day.
- Go for a 'treasure hunt' at the end of every day. Visualise everything positive and enjoyable about your day. Savour every find, no matter how small, to amass your treasure.
- Start or read your special diary of positive and good happenings in your life. It doesn't matter how small the event, it could be something as simple as enjoying something in the natural world, such as a beautiful sky or the changing reflections in some water. It makes wonderful reading when you read them all together.
- Choose an affirmation that appears very special and relevant at the moment. Incorporate its message wholly into the way you live the next few hours. For example, "I am relaxed and comfortable".
- If you find yourself dwelling on your pain, say "STOP THAT" to yourself. Then find something practical to do to take your mind off the pain
- Start a journal or diary to write down your feelings.
- Smile! When you smile, endorphins are released. Endorphins are your body's own natural painkillers.
- Set yourself goals for each day/week/month It doesn't matter how small, provided you have something to work towards.
- Include in every day: a little exercise of some sort, a relaxation session, some work (which could be voluntary), some fun, an attention holding interest or leisure activity, some social contact. Also, of course, remember pacing, planning and prioritising of your activities to ensure you don't overstretch yourself.
- Talk to your friends! - see our Forum and Contact Club pages.
