Take your Time at Christmas
by Jan Sadler

The Christmas season is beginning to hot up and so this means we need to do all we can to keep the pressure off. We need to think about how we can best use our sometimes limited energies to cope with the Christmas preparations - and also have enough oomph left over to actually enjoy the holiday season.

Here are two important ways of how best to use our time in finding the energy to do everything we need to do and have more fun and enjoyment at Christmas time.

1. Take your time. Taking your time and slowing down will improve the quality of your life more than almost anything. Rushing is stressful, instead tell yourself "There's plenty of time..." It will help you to slow down and keep things in perspective.

Set your own pace. When someone is pushing you or if you feel the demands are becoming too heavy, it's OK to say 'no'.

2. Organise your time. The key to surviving the queues, other shoppers, avoid recurring pain and have spare energy left is pacing. Do a little bit here, a little bit there, and keep changing your position so you aren't over-sitting, over-carrying, over-walking or over-anything else!

A few more ideas for keeping Christmas in its place:

Remember the PainSupport motto: "I can if I plan".
Keep things in perspective.
Only do things that are absolutely necessary or important to you.
Plan your days and activities thoughtfully and carefully.
See if you can find easier ways to do all the jobs you want to do.
Accept help - could someone else do that job instead of you?
Always ask "Will the benefits of doing this outweigh the costs to me?"
Be very clear, to yourself and others, about what you can/cannot do.
Structure your activities, so that you know, before you start, how long it is sensible for you to sit or stand at a task before you need to move.

See below for a gift to give to yourself - and a gift from us to you.

  Your Gift to Yourself...

Each day, plan for three separate moments in your day, whether at home or at work, where you pause for a few minutes of inner peace and quiet.
Do nothing...
Do nothing except concentrate on slow deep breathing for a few minutes.
Allow space for yourself.
Mental and physical rest isn't a luxury; it's a necessity!

Shopping
If you need to go out for your shopping take several short trips rather than one long one. Go early in the day when it's quieter and perhaps take a friend to help carry your bags if there's no home delivery service. If possible, see if family, friends or neighbours could help out with fetching and carrying.

Let your fingers do the walking!

These companies offer a good online service, keep the list handy! Remember to allow plenty of time for delivery of your orders. Some, such as Beauty Naturals, offer free postage. There are usually plenty of bargains to be had around Christmastime.

Something to think about...

"In the depth of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
-- Camus

Laughter is the best medicine

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump,
May your yams be delicious may your pies take the prize,
May your Christmas day dinner stay off of your thighs.
Merry Christmas!
