The Green-Eyed Monster

by Jan Sadler of PainSupport

www.painsupport.co.uk

Just recently, a friend told me about a fantastic exhibition she'd been to see in London, which is one I would love to have seen myself. I knew that I couldn’t go because of living with pain and its limitations. It was then that I had a major visit from the ‘Green-Eyed Monster’!

I expect that most of us feel these pangs, or even have full-blown episodes of envy or jealousy from time to time. They are usually triggered by a situation where you can’t have or do something that someone else can.

Envy is an uncomfortable frame of mind. Once I'd identified the feeling, I knew I had to shake it off as soon as possible, so I started thinking how I could go about it.

I realized I had a choice. One was to focus on my limitations and spoil my day and drain my energy. Instead, I decided to change the envy into something positive and uplifting – but how!

When I turned the feelings of resentment and resistance into enjoyment of hearing all about my friend’s experiences and admiration that she had made the effort to go to the exhibition, I found that the envy disappeared. I also reminded myself that I have strengths and blessings of my own. After all, as well as their own personal resources and advantages everyone has limitations of some kind. What's more, we can only deal with the cards that life has handed us and make the most of them, whatever they are.

If you ever get a visit from the ‘Green-Eyed Monster’ here are some ideas to help you develop confidence and resilience – and kick it out of your life for ever!

Appreciate that you have a choice in how you deal with a situation. Choose a response that will be of value to you.

Rather than resenting what you can't do or have, appreciate and make full use of what you do have.

Find your way around any limitations by focusing on constructive and positive ways forward.

Slow down! Don't miss the small things in life. Be grateful for and appreciate the wonders in nature around you.

Keep a ‘Treasure Box’ notebook for all that's good in your life. It sounds simple just to write down a few things each day that you appreciate - but this is a magical practice. It will open your eyes and you will soon start seeking things throughout your day to jot down in your notebook.

Boost your confidence by including in your notebook a list of your positive qualities and achievements.

Spend time enjoying activities and pastimes that meet your own wishes and needs.

Finally, look at the world, and at others, with goodwill, compassion and gratitude. See the transformations take place in your life as you move forward with positivity. You can make something wonderful and enjoyable of your life even in the most difficult of circumstances. In your own way and in your own time you can live successfully, whatever life brings.

Stress Reducing Tip

Four Ways to Beat Stress and Anxiety

1. Take five minutes out of every hour to relax and unwind.

2. Spend at least 30 minutes every day doing something you can enjoy, and not something that is on your "to-do" list!

3. Identify your stress triggers and avoid them.

4. Have de-stressors to hand that will quickly relax you - listening to favourite pieces of music, photos of happy memories, relaxation and breathing exercises.

And now try one of our CDs or downloads! There are beautiful visualisations and wonderful imaginary places to explore on them all.

It worked for me!

NC, US member of PainSupport has a great hobby which gives both her and her friends a boost, she says,

“The idea I found helpful was to add new, good things (hobbies, treats, distractions and activities) into my life, rather than trying not to focus on the pain. The side effect is that now that my life is fuller, the pain is still there, but it isn't the center or focus of my life any more.

“I've recently started beading and the focus required to learn new techniques, choose patterns and visualize the finished product gives me a break from the pain. I find this works even better if I add music on my iPod so it's truly a multi-sensory experience. It almost feels like meditation.

“The good feeling I get when I give a necklace to a family member or friend and they love it also helps boost my self-image. It's amazing!”

There are plenty of beading sites on the internet and the choice of patterns and beads is only limited by your imagination! It's a great hobby for people in pain you can do a little bit at a time without any mess to clear up or put away.

A bitter tongue makes life bitter, a sweet tongue makes life better."

What I've learned by having Boys

1. A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house, 4 inches deep.

2. A 3-year old Boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.

3. Certain Legos will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old Boy.

4. No matter how much jelly you put in a swimming pool, you still can't walk on water.

5. Pool filters do not like jelly.
