Changes

by Jan Sadler of PainSupport

www.painsupport.co.uk

We can change many things in our lives but the past cannot be changed. We cannot change the circumstances that caused our pain. Having a painful condition in our lives is bound to bring big changes - which can mean an uncomfortable, bumpy ride for a while until we adjust to the new situation.

Here are some tips on coming terms with your pain and the changes in your life.

Move on from the past, let it go, it cannot be changed.

Concentrate instead on enjoying what you can do, even though it may be different from before.

Accept that nothing stays the same for ever, change is the essence of life.

Make a list of all the good things in your life - and read it every day, particularly at night, before you go to sleep.

One of the best ways to release anger, anxiety and depression is to write your thoughts and feelings in a journal.

Be kind to yourself.

When times are particularly difficult, just 'float' through the day, not pressurising yourself in any way.

Realise that when you accept your situation, it frees you to concentrate on helping yourself. There is always something more that you can do to help yourself. Explore and find new ways to help yourself.

Talk to people, whether friends, family or a counsellor. Be open and honest about how you truly feel.

Give yourself plenty of interesting occupations and arrange plenty to look forward to, no matter how small. Even small 'treats' like the occasional chocolate or special drink, manicure, candlelit bath or a massage will bring some enjoyment and anticipatory pleasure to your life – and produce feel-good hormones in your body.

Make the best of your life. List, acknowledge and enjoy all the good things already in your life and look forward to those that will come your way.

Conserve your energy, you need it for coping with your pain. Avoid stress and don't take on battles that don't really concern you or where little is to be gained from confrontation. Be at peace with yourself and the world around you.

PainSupport member Michael says,

"Thank you, Jan, for the wonderful CD. I am so pleased with it! I've been listening to it a lot and it really helps me relax. It's very full and varied, with both short exercises and some beautiful visualisations. I love the old tree by the stream and the valley with the patchwork fields. The ‘Secret Hideaway' track is gorgeously relaxing with or without the music. Lovely places to take myself to when I'm feeling anxious.  I look forward to listening to it often - thank you, Jan, for 'Perfect Relaxation' - I think it's my favourite of them all!"

Stress Reducing Tip

Focus on  your nose!

When our minds are filled with stressful thoughts, our bodies become stressed.

Focusing on body processes can help calm mental activity, which in turn can result in physical relaxation. This technique will help you take a break from stressful thoughts.

With your eyes closed, shift your attention to the tip of your nose. As you breathe in, become aware of the air entering your nostrils.

As you breathe out, be aware of the sensations of air passing back out. Do this several times…

See if you can notice the difference in how the air feels. You may find that on an in-breath the air will feel slightly cool, and when breathed out it is will be warmer.

Notice also that you feel more calm in mind and body.

It worked for me!

One of our PainSupport members, Barbara, in the UK says,

I went on a ‘Lightning Technique’ training course.  This involves the use of self hypnosis techniques, NLP and life coaching. The training helped me to deal with chronic pain better. In fact, I have been able to be a lot more active since the course, and have been much less aware of the discomfort a lot of the time. It has really improved my quality of life.  It is expensive, but it was an investment which proved very worthwhile.

If you can't get to London, and are interested in the techniques used, there is sure to be somebody offering NLP, life coaching hypnosis near to you.

Time for the E Word!

Exercise? How can I?” you may say, “I’m in too much pain”.

Surprisingly, gentle exercise will actually STOP the pain for a while. There are many reasons for this, including the release of endorphins.

Find out more from this Mayo Clinic page about the way exercise can take the edge off chronic pain.

No more excuses! There are many ways to exercise at home – you can even use a walking programme in a few feet of space! There are plenty of exercise DVDs and videos available for you to follow from Tai Chi to Pilates.
